KDHE Awards Matching Grant for Playground Rubber Grantee Name: USD 109, Republic Co. School Grant Fiscal Year: 2023 Grant Amount Awarded: $9165.00 Total Grant Amount Spent: $9165.00 Match Amount Spent: $9165.00 KDHE awarded USO 109 a matching grant of $9165 for the purchase of rubber mulch made of recycled tires in April 2023. The mulch was added to the existing mulch in the playground to reach a desired depth of 6". This will meet a safe surface for falls requirements. KDHE offers this grant as a way to teach our young people about the importance of recycling And as a way of keeping our environment clean and healthy. The rubber is also a safe surface in the fall zones around the playground equipment. KOHE requires the teachers to use the project as a teaching tool in the classrooms, and for the school district to use it to bring awareness to the community as to the benefits of recycling. The mulch was purchased from Champlin tire recycling in Concordia Ks. The district rented a skid loader to unload the pallets of mulch and used it to distribute the mulch around the playground area, and then to spread it out. Together a group of maintenance men finished spreading underneath the playground equipment and other areas the skid loader couldn't get to with rakes and shovels. The district will inform the public of the receiving of the grant and the installation of the mulch to the public by the following methods. It will be on the school website. On the school's Facebook page. And in our local paper. This is a much needed improvement to our school's playground. This will make it a much Safer and enjoyable place for the students to play in .. Thank you very much to KDHE and all those involved in making this happen. Andy Horner Maintenance/Transportation Director USD109 Republic Co. Schools

The NCAA League Cross Country meet was held at the Downs Lakeside Country Club on Thursday. The weather was looking ominous all day long but cleared up for all competitors to have a great day of competition. The girls team finished in third place with two medalists. The 'Queen' of the day was Ellie Callaway as 'She was the Champion' of the NCAA league. Dakota Clausen-Peters was ninth in medaling as well. Congrats on an awesome day, Go Buffs!!
