KDHE Awards Matching Grant for Playground Rubber
Grantee Name: USD 109, Republic Co. School
Grant Fiscal Year: 2023
Grant Amount Awarded: $9165.00
Total Grant Amount Spent: $9165.00
Match Amount Spent: $9165.00
KDHE awarded USO 109 a matching grant of $9165 for the purchase of rubber mulch made of recycled tires in April 2023. The mulch was added to the existing mulch in the playground to reach a desired depth of 6". This will meet a safe surface for falls requirements.
KDHE offers this grant as a way to teach our young people about the importance of recycling And as a way of keeping our environment clean and healthy. The rubber is also a safe surface in the fall zones around the playground equipment. KOHE requires the teachers to use the project as a teaching tool in the classrooms, and for the school district to use it to bring awareness to the community as to the benefits of recycling. The mulch was purchased from Champlin tire recycling in Concordia Ks.
The district rented a skid loader to unload the pallets of mulch and used it to distribute the mulch around the playground area, and then to spread it out. Together a group of maintenance men finished spreading underneath the playground equipment and other areas the skid loader couldn't get to with rakes and shovels.
The district will inform the public of the receiving of the grant and the installation of the mulch to the public by the following methods. It will be on the school website. On the school's Facebook page. And in our local paper. This is a much needed improvement to our school's playground. This will make it a much Safer and enjoyable place for the students to play in .. Thank you very much to KDHE and all those involved in making this happen.

The guys have been busy churning out some articles this week on the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict with supporting and opposing articles about continued U.S. involvement, along with one on general information about the conflict. Another recently posted article highlights how proud RCHS is of Ellie Callaway and the Girls Cross Country team for all their success this season, looking forward to what they will achieve this postseason. A nicely conducted interview with Coach Anthony Nunez is part of the article as well. The boys are hard at work on articles about the recent missile strikes and military escalation in Israel and Gaza.
