I grew up in the very small town of Lucas, Kansas (which some of you may know from the K-18 state baseball tournament.) Growing up in a small town and attending a small high school afforded me the opportunity to participate in many activities and pursue a wide range of interests. While in school I participated in football, basketball, track and summer baseball, as well as being active in music, forensics, student council, SADD and scholars bowl. I am very well aware of the advantages of going to the smaller high school, which is why I have chosen to spend my career teaching in them.
After high school I attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where I sang and was a student assistant on the basketball team. After college I began my teaching career in the tiny town of Bushton, Kansas where I taught high school social studies for five years and was given the opportunity to coach basketball, baseball, football, and track. After five years at Quivira Heights the school consolidated, and after one year at the new Central Plains high school, I came to Belleville to teach at Republic County Junior Senior High School.
During my time in the Central Plains school district I met my lovely wife, Stephanie (pictured above on the night before our wedding), who is the current FACS teacher at Republic County. We have been married for almost four years, and we have a wonderful son, J.D., who is growing so fast I can’t update the website fast enough to describe him.
I have been blessed to have such great students and colleagues throughout my teaching career, and I could not imagine myself in any other profession. I chose to become a teacher in college, but the seed was planted early because of the many teachers in my family, including my mother and grandfather. I believe that students will rise to the expectations that you set out for them, and that every student is capable of meaningful and fulfilling learning. All I ask out of my students to come to class with a willing attitude and the rest will take care of itself.
